MariaDB at a glance

MariaDB is a widely used open-source relational database, a community-developed fork of MySQL and a common drop-in replacement. The MariaDB Foundation ships coordinated releases across several maintained branches plus security fixes.

For admins minor updates within a branch are low-risk; apply them promptly, minding replication topology and the documented order. MariaDB belongs on the internal network with authentication, TLS and least-privilege accounts. Major-version upgrades are planned migrations that warrant testing of behaviour and SQL-mode changes; don't skip too many versions. Track the end-of-support date of your branch. Compatibility with MySQL is broad but not total — check application specifics when migrating. Back up before patching, and verify replication and applications afterwards.
