pfSense CE (Community Edition) is a free, FreeBSD-based firewall/router platform, widely used in homelabs and small networks. Netgate ships pfSense CE releases plus packages and security fixes; as a perimeter device, timely patching matters.

For admins updating runs through the web UI, but take a config backup first (pfSense exports the whole configuration) and mind the order on HA pairs. Never expose the web management or VPN portal to the WAN unprotected. Packages have their own cycles and are the usual upgrade stumbling block — check compatibility before larger jumps.
