Synology DSM at a glance

Synology DSM is the operating system on Synology NAS devices — file services, backup, virtualization and apps in one web-managed package, widespread in SMBs and homelabs. Synology ships DSM version updates plus security fixes; as an internet-adjacent storage appliance it's a frequent target, so updates are time-sensitive.

For admins DSM makes updating convenient (web UI, optional auto-update for security patches), but discipline still pays: back up the configuration before major DSM jumps, and check package/app compatibility. Keep the admin interface off the open internet, disable the default admin account, and enable two-factor. Snapshots and off-box backups are the real protection against data loss and ransomware — a NAS reachable from outside is a prime ransomware target.
