ALTCHA at a glance

ALTCHA is an open-source, self-hosted alternative to traditional CAPTCHA services. Instead of visual puzzles, the widget hands the browser a compute-bound proof-of-work task whose solution is verified on the server. What makes it attractive to administrators is that it needs no cookies, sends no personal data to third parties and embeds no external scripts, which simplifies privacy-compliant use on sign-in, contact and registration forms.

The project bundles the widget and the server-side verification libraries in a single repository and ships its output as regular releases. Anyone integrating ALTCHA themselves tracks these releases in order to pick up bug fixes and security updates promptly.

When updating, it pays to check compatibility between the widget and the verification library, since the two must work together. Changes to the challenge format or to default parameters should be validated in a staging environment before going live, so existing integrations keep producing valid responses.
