Blender at a glance
Blender is an open source suite for 3D modelling, animation, simulation, rendering and video editing. In companies it sits on workstations in engineering, visualisation, product imaging or marketing, usually together with graphics drivers that have to match its compute interfaces. Administrators deploy it to Windows, macOS and Linux, sometimes as a portable installation on render nodes.
The Blender Foundation publishes feature releases on a regular cadence and maintains a long-term support line that receives corrections only for an extended period. For studios with running projects that line is the calmer path, while feature releases bring new tools and changed defaults.
When updating, data compatibility matters most: files saved by a newer edition cannot be opened reliably by older builds, and add-ons have to match the scripting interface of the respective series. It has proven useful to keep several builds side by side, back up user preferences and add-ons, and move render nodes only after the workstations.
