BorgBackup at a glance
BorgBackup (Borg) is a widely used open-source deduplicating backup program with compression and authenticated encryption, favoured for efficient, secure backups. Borg ships regular releases plus fixes; as the tool guarding your backups, keeping it current and correctly configured matters.
For admins Borg is security-relevant in a specific way: it encrypts backups, so the repository passphrase/key is critical — lose it and the backups are unrecoverable; leak it and they are exposed. Keep Borg current for fixes, and mind that repository format changes between major versions can require care — read upgrade notes and keep client and repo versions compatible. The real work is operational: schedule backups, prune with a retention policy, and test restores regularly. Store repositories off the source system (append-only mode helps against ransomware). After updating, verify a backup and a test restore. Patchletter surfaces new Borg releases so fixes land.
