calibre at a glance
Calibre is an open source e-book management application with a converter, metadata editing, a reader, device support and a built-in content server. In public agencies, libraries and companies it usually runs as a workstation program on Windows, macOS or Linux; occasionally IT operates the content server so collections are reachable over the network. For administrators it is therefore widespread endpoint software that imports files from unknown sources.
The project publishes on a short cadence, often weekly, and additionally maintains larger milestone builds that change the database layout and the extension interface. Every build is tagged publicly and provided as installer packages plus a portable variant for Windows.
Two things matter when updating: third-party plugins often lag behind larger jumps, and the library format is adjusted the first time a newer build starts, which makes going back difficult. Backing up the library before an update is therefore advisable. Anyone exposing the content server should place it behind authentication and a reverse proxy and apply security corrections promptly.
