Ceph at a glance

Ceph is a widely used open-source distributed storage platform providing object, block and file storage at scale, common in private clouds and large deployments. Ceph ships named releases plus security fixes; as the storage layer many systems depend on, careful, staged updates are essential.

For admins Ceph upgrades are deliberate, orchestrated operations: follow the documented order (monitors, managers, OSDs, then gateways/MDS), don't skip releases, and ensure the cluster is healthy before starting. The cephadm/orchestrator tooling automates much of this. Back up configuration and verify HEALTH_OK before and after. Ceph's data-placement and recovery mean an upgrade shouldn't lose data, but a mishandled one can degrade or stall the cluster — plan a maintenance window. Keep management and dashboards off the open network. Track the release and its support window, and apply security fixes promptly; patchletter surfaces new Ceph releases.
