Certbot at a glance
Certbot is the widely used EFF client for obtaining and renewing free Let's Encrypt TLS certificates, automating HTTPS on countless servers. Certbot ships regular releases plus fixes; keeping it current keeps certificate renewal reliable and compatible with the ACME service.
For admins Certbot usually runs as an automated renewal task (a cron/systemd timer). The main risks are operational: a broken or lapsed renewal means expired certificates and outage, so monitor renewals and test them (--dry-run). Keep Certbot current so it stays compatible with ACME protocol and API changes and picks up plugin fixes. The account key and private keys are sensitive — protect them and their permissions. After Certbot or plugin updates, verify a renewal still succeeds and services reload the new certificate. Alternatives like acme.sh or built-in ACME (Caddy, Traefik) serve the same role; keep whichever you use current.
