CockroachDB is a widely used distributed SQL database built for resilience and horizontal scale, with PostgreSQL wire compatibility. CockroachDB ships regular releases plus security fixes; as a clustered database holding important data, careful, staged updates are essential.

For admins CockroachDB upgrades are rolling and well-supported: upgrade nodes one at a time, don't skip major versions, and be aware of the finalize step that commits a major upgrade (after which rollback isn't possible) — read the upgrade guide and back up first. The cluster belongs on a protected network with authentication and TLS (it's secure-by-default in production mode — keep it that way, not in insecure mode). Check client and application compatibility, though Postgres compatibility eases this. After upgrading each node, verify it rejoins and the cluster is healthy before finalizing. Track the version and its support window; patchletter surfaces new CockroachDB releases.
