Dell Optimizer at a glance

Dell Optimizer is the system application Dell ships with its business notebooks and desktops. It brings power and battery profiles, display settings, audio and conferencing features, and presence or proximity detection together in one place, and in managed fleets it acts as the common surface for device-specific settings. It is normally distributed and pre-configured through an existing software deployment system rather than installed machine by machine.

Dell publishes new builds at irregular intervals, typically several times a year. Version numbers combine a major, minor and maintenance level plus a build number. Feature scope and supported model ranges change between major branches, and older branches are retired after a transition period.

Before rolling out, verify that the model range in question actually supports the new branch — not every system receives every build, and a major branch change can require a fresh installation rather than an in-place upgrade. Because the application interacts closely with firmware, BIOS settings and drivers, those should be current first. In managed environments, decide which features are enforced centrally and which are left to users.
