draw.io at a glance

draw.io is a diagram editor administrators use to document network layouts, rack assignments, firewall rule sets and process flows. It runs in the browser, as a desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux, and as a self-hosted instance inside your own network; drawings are stored as open XML, so they can be versioned in Git or on a file server. Integration into Confluence and other wikis is common as well.

The project publishes very frequently, often several times a month, with a continuously incrementing main version and no fixed cycle. Desktop packages, container images and the server build share the same numbering but do not always appear at the same time.

The main thing to watch when updating is drawing compatibility: newer builds open older files, while files saved with new shapes or features may render incorrectly in older ones. If you run your own instance, refresh the image regularly because it bundles web dependencies, and re-check plugin and wiki integrations afterwards. Test a representative set of diagrams before moving a whole team to a new main version.
