FreeRADIUS at a glance
FreeRADIUS is the most widely deployed open-source RADIUS server, providing authentication for network access (Wi-Fi, VPN, switch port security) across countless networks. FreeRADIUS ships regular releases plus coordinated security fixes; as core authentication infrastructure, careful, timely updates matter.
For admins FreeRADIUS usually comes from the distribution, which backports fixes — for security advisories, confirm the patched package is installed and the service restarted. Because it authenticates network access, a flaw or outage affects who can get onto the network — treat it as critical. Harden the configuration: strong shared secrets, current EAP/TLS settings, and least privilege on the backing directory/database. A notable class of RADIUS protocol issues (Blast-RADIUS) reinforced the need to keep it current and configured correctly. After updating, verify that authentication still works before users are affected. Track the version and its support status; patchletter surfaces new FreeRADIUS releases.
