HandBrake at a glance
HandBrake is an open-source video transcoder for Windows, macOS and Linux that converts recordings into widely supported formats. In IT it is used less for media libraries than for practical chores: shrinking training and meeting recordings, preparing screen captures for the intranet or normalising footage before archiving. Besides the desktop interface there is a command line tool that fits into scripts and batch jobs.

Because HandBrake bundles libraries such as FFmpeg and the usual encoders, their fixes reach users only through new application builds — a reason not to let installations sit untouched for years.

The Windows interface requires a matching .NET runtime, and Linux distribution packages often lag behind the project. Download only from the project site or the official repository, as fake installers are a known lure.
