htop at a glance

htop is a beloved interactive process viewer for Linux and Unix — a friendlier, colourful alternative to top for watching processes, CPU, memory and load. It ships releases in an unhurried cadence; it's a lightweight diagnostic tool.

For admins htop is low-risk and read-mostly (it can send signals to processes, with the user's privileges). It usually comes from the distribution, and the update driver is features and compatibility rather than security. Its value is operational: quickly see what's consuming CPU or memory, filter and sort processes, and kill a runaway process. There's little to maintain beyond keeping a current version for new features and platform support. Related modern tools (btop, glances) offer richer views if you want them.
