Joplin at a glance
Joplin is an open-source note and to-do application that stores notes as Markdown and keeps them locally. Synchronisation is optional and can run over Nextcloud, WebDAV, S3, OneDrive, Dropbox or the project's own service, with end-to-end encryption available. In IT teams it serves as a store for operational documentation, runbooks and research without necessarily routing content through a third-party service.
Development happens on GitHub, and releases are published there. The desktop application, mobile apps, terminal client and server component ship separately and carry their own tags; alongside stable builds the project issues pre-releases regularly. The cadence is high, and many builds are bug-fix follow-ups shortly after a feature release.
When updating, avoid rolling out pre-releases broadly and wait for the stable builds instead. Larger jumps migrate the local database, so backing up the profile directory beforehand is sensible. If you synchronise, keep clients from drifting too far apart in version, and re-check installed plugins for compatibility after an update.
