macmon NAC at a glance
macmon NAC is a network access control solution. It detects every device that connects to the network, classifies it and decides whether it is admitted, moved to a separate segment or blocked. Administrators use it to control switches and wireless controllers by 802.1X, RADIUS or SNMP and to keep a current overview of all devices on the network, including across different vendors.
The software runs as an appliance or virtual machine and can be spread across several sites. The vendor delivers new versions through its customer area, and public release notes are scarce.
When updating, the procedure matters more than the software itself. A restart of the system can briefly affect decisions about network access, so updates belong in a maintenance window. A backup of the configuration is advisable beforehand, and in distributed installations the central system and the remote sites should be updated in an agreed order.
