MagicQuit at a glance

MagicQuit is a small macOS menu-bar utility that automatically quits apps you are no longer using — either after a configurable idle period or when the last window closes, the way Windows behaves. Both mechanisms work from exclusion lists, with media players excluded by default.

For admins this is a memory and battery topic: on machines with many permanently open apps it reclaims noticeable amounts of RAM. Counting windows requires the Accessibility permission — in managed fleets that means a PPPC profile via MDM, otherwise every machine prompts individually. The idle-quit feature needs no special permissions.

The project is open source and distributed through GitHub releases, so for asset management: track the version in your inventory and push updates through software distribution — there is no signed auto-update mechanism to rely on.
