Microsoft Entra Connect at a glance
Microsoft Entra Connect, formerly Azure AD Connect, links an on-premises Active Directory with Microsoft Entra ID and forms the basis of hybrid identity. The locally installed tool synchronises users, groups and their attributes into the cloud, so that staff can use a single identity to reach both internal resources and Microsoft 365 services.
Several sign-in methods are available: password hash synchronisation, pass-through authentication and federation through AD FS. In addition, Entra Connect Health monitors the server components involved. Microsoft positions the cloud-managed Entra Cloud Sync as the successor approach, while Entra Connect remains the choice for scenarios that need a broader feature set.
The software runs on a domain-joined Windows server. Updates should be planned, because a synchronisation component writes central directory data; the release notes list changed defaults, prerequisites and possible forced upgrades, and outdated major versions regularly fall out of support.
