The Microsoft OLE DB Driver for SQL Server (MSOLEDBSQL) is the current OLE DB interface that lets Windows applications reach SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance and related services. It replaces the older SQL Server Native Client that shipped with the operating system and is installed as a standalone redistributable on application servers, terminal servers and workstations where legacy line-of-business software, reporting tools or ETL jobs connect through OLE DB.
Microsoft ships the driver independently of SQL Server itself, in its own minor-release line. Builds appear at irregular intervals and contain bug fixes, support for newer server features and, regularly, security fixes.
When updating, note that several major lines can be installed side by side and that applications name the driver explicitly in their connection strings. Newer lines enforce stricter encryption and certificate validation, which can break connections to servers with self-signed certificates. The Visual C++ redistributable in both x86 and x64 is a prerequisite.
