Eclipse Mosquitto at a glance
Eclipse Mosquitto is a widely used open-source MQTT message broker, common in IoT and home-automation setups. Mosquitto ships regular releases plus security fixes; as a broker that can control devices and often bridges untrusted networks, hardening and keeping it current matter.
For admins the cardinal rule is not to run Mosquitto open: enable authentication and TLS, set access control lists on topics, and never expose an unauthenticated broker to the internet — an open MQTT broker leaks data and can let anyone control connected devices. It usually comes from the distribution or the project; keep it patched. Because MQTT often drives physical actuators (switches, locks), treat access seriously. After updating, verify that clients connect, authenticate and publish/subscribe correctly. It's frequently paired with Home Assistant and Zigbee2MQTT — check those integrations after updates. Track the version and its support status; patchletter surfaces new Mosquitto releases so security fixes land.
