NATS at a glance

NATS is a widely used open-source, high-performance messaging system for cloud-native applications, microservices and IoT (a CNCF project). NATS ships regular releases plus security fixes; as messaging infrastructure many services depend on, careful updates matter.

For admins NATS servers are usually run as a cluster (or supercluster), so updates roll node-by-node with attention to compatibility — read the release notes and back up configuration first. The security fundamentals: enable authentication (NATS supports tokens, credentials and NKeys/JWT) and TLS, and don't expose the server unprotected, since it carries application messages. JetStream (persistence) adds stored data to protect and back up. After updating, verify that clients connect, publish/subscribe works and any JetStream streams are intact. Client and server compatibility spans versions but check it. Its simplicity and speed are draws, but the auth and TLS discipline is essential.
