NetBird at a glance
NetBird is an open-source, self-hostable mesh VPN built on WireGuard, connecting devices into a secure private network with identity-based access — an alternative to Tailscale. NetBird ships regular releases across its clients and self-hosted server plus security fixes; as connectivity software with network reach, keeping it current and access-controlled matters.
For admins the security model rests on your identity provider and access policies: authorize only devices and users you control, segment with access rules, and if self-hosting the management/signal server, keep it current and secured. Keep clients updated and enforce a minimum version. Because NetBird can bridge networks (routing peers), configure routes deliberately to avoid unintended exposure. Self-hosting keeps coordination off third-party infrastructure — a control and privacy advantage that puts the security burden on you. After updates, verify connectivity and policies. Track releases; patchletter surfaces new NetBird versions so security fixes reach every device.
