NextDNS is a cloud-based DNS filtering service that blocks ads, trackers, malware and phishing domains. Its Windows client connects endpoints to a user-configured NextDNS profile via DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH), allowing filtering rules, blocklists and analytics to be managed centrally in the cloud. In corporate environments the client is often deployed as an MSI package, with profile ID and other parameters settable for mass deployment through MDM systems.

The client shares its codebase with the open-source NextDNS CLI tool and receives ongoing bug fixes, platform support updates and minor feature additions. Releases appear irregularly, driven by development progress rather than a fixed schedule.

When updating, administrators should verify compatibility with existing group policies and MDM configurations, since the profile ID and root CA certificate may need to be reconfigured after a fresh install. It is also advisable to check that DoH connections do not conflict with existing network or security policies (such as firewall exceptions or SSL inspection) and to confirm the systray service shows a correct connection status after updating.
