Nitrokey App 2 is the official management application for Nitrokey 3 hardware security keys, used by administrators and end users to control FIDO2 authentication, password management, and firmware updates from a single graphical interface. The application runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS and is distributed as standalone binaries (exe/msi), a Flatpak package, and via the Python package index.

Releases appear irregularly, roughly every few weeks to months, published through GitHub with signed commits and traceable changelogs. Alongside feature additions such as the password manager or passkey support, releases frequently include firmware compatibility adjustments for new Nitrokey 3 hardware revisions.

When updating, administrators should note that the app is tightly coupled with the underlying pynitrokey library, meaning version jumps can also change device-side behavior. Windows installers are code-signed, yet antivirus false positives still occur occasionally. Before larger updates, reviewing the release notes is advisable, particularly regarding firmware update functionality, to avoid incompatible intermediate states between device and application.
