Nmap at a glance

Nmap is the standard open-source network scanner for discovery, port scanning and security auditing — a staple in the admin and security toolbox. The project ships releases in an unhurried cadence, bundling the Nmap Scripting Engine and its script library.

For admins Nmap runs with the user's (often elevated) rights and is a tool rather than a service, so the update driver is features and script coverage rather than exposure. Keep it reasonably current for accurate detection and up-to-date scripts, and source it officially. On Windows it bundles the Npcap driver, which carries its own security updates and should be kept current. The important caveat is authorization: scanning networks you don't own or have permission to test can be illegal — scope it carefully. Nmap pairs with tools like Zenmap and downstream vulnerability scanners.
