openmediavault at a glance
OpenMediaVault is a popular open-source NAS operating system built on Debian, common in homelabs for network storage. It ships regular releases plus security fixes and rides Debian's security updates; as a storage system holding important data, careful updates matter.
For admins updates run through the web UI or apt, with major versions tracking Debian releases — back up the configuration and verify data health before larger jumps, and read the release notes. Plugins (and the OMV-Extras ecosystem) have their own updates and are the usual compatibility stumbling block. OpenMediaVault holds your data, so keep the web interface off the open internet behind authentication, and rely on snapshots plus off-box backups (RAID and snapshots are not a backup). After updating, verify shares, disks and plugins. Track the version and Debian's support window beneath it; patchletter surfaces new OpenMediaVault releases.
