OpenVAS / Greenbone at a glance
OpenVAS (part of the Greenbone Vulnerability Management stack) is a widely used open-source vulnerability scanner, checking systems against a large, frequently updated feed of vulnerability tests. It ships engine releases plus, crucially, a constantly updated feed of network vulnerability tests — both streams matter.
For admins OpenVAS has two update rhythms: the scanner/manager components and the vulnerability feed, which updates daily as new CVEs emerge — automate the feed sync so scans reflect current threats. Keep the engine current too. The scanner holds credentials for authenticated scans and produces sensitive findings, so keep it on the management network behind authentication and protect the reports. The authorization caveat applies: scan only systems you are permitted to. After updates, verify that the feed synced and scans run. Its value is finding vulnerabilities before attackers do — but only if the feed is current. Patchletter surfaces new Greenbone/OpenVAS releases.
