OpenVPN at a glance
OpenVPN is a long-established, open-source VPN — client and server components secure remote access and site links across many platforms. The project ships releases plus coordinated security fixes; as VPN software with broad network reach, prompt updates matter.
For admins OpenVPN often comes from the distribution or the project's packages. Keep both server and clients current, and mind the compatibility of the OpenSSL it links against — VPN endpoints are exposed, so security fixes are time-sensitive. The configuration and certificates/keys are the crown jewels: protect the CA and keys, use strong ciphers and current TLS, and rotate as needed. After updates, verify tunnels and routing. For a leaner modern alternative many pair or migrate to WireGuard; OpenVPN remains flexible and widely supported.
