OpenZFS at a glance
OpenZFS is the open-source implementation of the ZFS file system, providing checksummed, snapshot-capable, highly reliable storage on Linux and FreeBSD. OpenZFS ships regular releases plus fixes; as the file system holding your data, careful updates matter.
For admins OpenZFS usually comes from the distribution or the project's packages, and on Linux it involves a kernel module — so kernel and ZFS versions must stay compatible; check that before kernel upgrades, or a pool may not import. Update ZFS for fixes and features, but keep pool-version/feature-flag upgrades deliberate, since enabling new features can prevent importing the pool on older releases. Snapshots are a powerful safety net but not an off-box backup. After updating, run a scrub and verify pool health. Track the ZFS version against your kernel; patchletter surfaces new OpenZFS releases so data-integrity fixes aren't missed.
