Oracle SQL Developer at a glance

Oracle SQL Developer is the graphical workbench for Oracle databases. Database administrators and developers use it to run SQL and PL/SQL, maintain schemas, tables, users and privileges, schedule jobs, and inspect execution plans and active sessions on running instances. It also covers data import and export, a modelling component, and wizards for migrating from third-party systems. The tool is free to use and runs as a Java application on Windows, Linux and macOS.

Oracle ships new editions under a quarter-oriented numbering scheme, with correction builds appearing in between. Because the tool interacts closely with the database version and the drivers, each edition typically shifts the range of supported database and Java levels as well.

When updating, export your existing connections and preferences from the user profile first: a new edition offers to migrate these settings on first start, and that migration does not always complete cleanly. Confirm the required Java runtime, and test any in-house extensions against the new edition before rolling it out broadly.
