pfSense Plus at a glance

pfSense Plus is a FreeBSD-based firewall/router platform (from Netgate), popular in SMBs and homelabs. Netgate ships pfSense Plus releases plus packages and security fixes; as a perimeter device, timely patching matters.

For admins updating is convenient through the web UI, but take a config backup first (pfSense can export the whole configuration) and mind the order on HA pairs. Never expose the web management or VPN portal to the WAN unprotected. Packages have their own cycles and are the usual upgrade stumbling block — check compatibility before larger jumps. After updating, verify VPN tunnels and firewall rules. Track the version and its support status; subscribe to Netgate advisories so security-relevant updates aren't missed.
