pgBackRest at a glance

pgBackRest is a widely used, robust open-source backup and restore tool for PostgreSQL, offering parallel backups, incremental backups and point-in-time recovery. pgBackRest ships regular releases plus fixes; as the tool guarding your database backups, keeping it current and correctly configured matters.

For admins pgBackRest is operationally critical: it protects your PostgreSQL data, so the discipline is configuration and testing rather than frequent updates. Keep it reasonably current for fixes and PostgreSQL-version compatibility, and mind that pgBackRest and PostgreSQL versions should align. Store backups off the database host (it supports S3-compatible and other remote repositories, ideally with encryption and immutability). The essential practice: test restores and point-in-time recovery regularly, since a backup is only proven by a successful restore. Protect the repository credentials and encryption keys. After updating, verify that a backup and a test restore succeed. Track releases; patchletter surfaces new pgBackRest versions so fixes land.
