PGP Encryption Desktop at a glance

PGP Encryption Desktop is the endpoint client of Broadcom's encryption suite, previously sold as Symantec Encryption Desktop. It combines full-disk encryption, encrypted virtual disks, file and folder protection, PGP key management and email encryption in a single package. In managed deployments the client pulls policy and recovery keys from PGP Encryption Server, so encryption, key escrow and emergency access stay under central control.

Broadcom maintains client and server on a shared version line. Larger releases are followed by maintenance builds and occasional hotfixes, published separately for Windows, macOS and Linux. The cadence is unhurried, yet individual builds carry security fixes or drop outdated cryptographic algorithms from key generation.

When updating, the client-to-server compatibility matrix matters most: a client should never be newer than the server managing it. Supported operating system and kernel levels matter just as much, because with disk encryption active the driver sits deep in the boot path. A verified backup, a recovery key within reach and a small pilot ring before the fleet rollout are non-negotiable.
