S/4HANA at a glance
SAP S/4HANA is SAP's ERP software for a company's core business processes, such as finance, procurement, logistics, manufacturing and sales. It runs on the SAP HANA in-memory database and is offered as a cloud service or as an installation run in-house or by a hosting provider. For administrators and basis teams it is business-critical; an outage halts entire workflows.
The cloud edition is updated regularly by the vendor, whereas self-operated installations get new major releases only at longer intervals. In between, SAP delivers Feature Package Stacks with new functions and Support Package Stacks with fixes. Older releases drop out of standard maintenance and are then supported only for an extra fee or on a limited basis.
When updating, plan early: check compatibility of custom extensions, add-ons and interfaces, the HANA database requirements and user role maintenance. A full test in a quality system with realistic data, a reliable backup and an agreed maintenance window are part of it. SAP publishes security fixes as Security Notes on a monthly patch day; review them regularly.
