SonicWall SonicOS at a glance

SonicOS is the operating system running on SonicWall firewalls such as the TZ, NSa and NSsp lines. It handles packet filtering, NAT, VPN, intrusion prevention, content filtering and management through the web interface or cloud management. Administrators use it to protect the perimeter of small and mid-sized sites and to provide remote access over IPsec and SSL VPN.

Firmware is published in separate branches per hardware generation. Maintenance and security releases appear irregularly, and security fixes are accompanied by advisories from the vendor's PSIRT. Release notes live in the technical documentation portal, while firmware downloads sit behind the MySonicWall customer account and require an active support contract. The vendor offers no open, machine-readable release feed.

Export the configuration before upgrading, because the way back is limited and a downgrade may require a factory reset. Check the permitted upgrade path between branches, VPN client compatibility, a maintenance window for the reboot, and the node order on high-availability pairs. Afterwards verify the rule base, licences and logging.
