SQL Server Management Studio at a glance
SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is Microsoft's graphical management environment for SQL Server, Azure SQL Database and other SQL-based services. Administrators use it to configure instances, manage databases, backups, security and jobs, and to run T-SQL through the integrated query editor. Object Explorer, execution plans and scripting are also part of the feature set.
SSMS follows a continuous servicing model: only the latest point release of a major branch receives security fixes, bug fixes and new features. Updates arrive as point releases within the current major version, and the latest generally available release is built on the Visual Studio shell.
When updating, note that SSMS is maintained independently of the SQL Server engine and installed separately. Before upgrading, back up saved connections and settings and check extensions and scripts for compatibility. Because only the newest point release is supported, administrators should keep the tool current.
