Synology Drive at a glance

Synology Drive consists of the Synology Drive Server package, installed from Package Center on a DiskStation, together with clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. It provides file synchronisation between endpoints and the NAS, external share links, version history for recovering deleted or encrypted files, and team folders with permissions. In small and mid-sized environments it often replaces an external file-sharing service.

Server and client parts are published separately: the package arrives through Package Center, the clients through the download page or software distribution. Larger feature jumps usually follow a DSM major release, while fixes and security updates appear in between.

Order matters when updating: install the server package first and the clients afterwards, otherwise sync connections break. Before larger jumps, read the release notes for the minimum DSM version required and for predecessor packages that have been retired. Because the service is frequently reachable from the internet, updates deserve prompt attention and existing share links regular review.
