TimescaleDB is a widely used open-source time-series database built as a PostgreSQL extension, combining time-series performance with full SQL. TimescaleDB ships regular releases plus security fixes; as a database extension holding important data, careful updates matter.

For admins the key relationship is with PostgreSQL: the TimescaleDB extension version must be compatible with your PostgreSQL major version — check that before upgrading either, and follow the documented extension-update procedure (ALTER EXTENSION) rather than just swapping binaries. Back up the database first. Minor updates are low-risk; larger jumps can change behaviour — read the notes. As a Postgres extension, standard PostgreSQL hardening applies: internal network, authentication, TLS, least privilege. After updating, verify that hypertables, continuous aggregates and queries work. The connected applications should be checked across version changes.
