Total Commander at a glance
Total Commander is a dual-pane file manager for Windows. Alongside moving and copying large sets of files it includes archive handling, an FTP and SFTP client, search that reaches inside archives, directory comparison, multi-rename and a plugin interface. Administrators mostly use it for recurring file and transfer work on servers, terminal servers and workstations.
Development moves at a steady pace: major versions arrive at long intervals, with interim builds in between that fix defects and round out individual features. It is shareware, delivered as a conventional installer, and offers unattended switches for software distribution.
Two things deserve attention when updating: installed plugins, which do not always match immediately after a version jump, and the settings files wincmd.ini and wcx_ftp.ini, which should be backed up beforehand — particularly for portable or centrally deployed installations where paths and storage locations are set deliberately. After the update, check FTP connections, packer plugins and keyboard mappings.
