Umami at a glance

Umami is a self-hosted web-analytics application and a data-frugal alternative to hosted services: the tracking script works without cookies and the collected data stays in your own database. It is usually run as a container with PostgreSQL or MySQL behind it and a reverse proxy in front, and a single instance can cover many websites.

The project publishes its releases on GitHub together with matching container images. Minor releases are typically a few weeks apart; besides bug fixes they add new reports and occasionally change the data model. Database migrations run automatically when the service starts.

A database backup before every update therefore matters, because those migrations cannot simply be rolled back. When crossing a major version, re-check the embedded tracking script, any API calls your own reports rely on, and the environment variables in use. Since the interface has a login and is often reachable from the internet, a strong administrator password and staying on a current release are part of basic hygiene.
