Uyuni at a glance

Uyuni is an open-source solution for managing large server estates. Administrators use it to inventory systems, roll out software and security updates in a coordinated way, automate configuration through Salt, and keep the patch status of entire environments auditable. It supports several Linux distributions, so mixed estates can be run from a single console. Uyuni is also the open-source foundation that SUSE Manager is built on.

The project publishes its server editions on a calendar-based schedule, regularly delivering new features along with security fixes for bundled components. Between editions, the server's base operating system, the supported client systems, and embedded tooling can change.

Before an upgrade, administrators should read the release notes, because individual jumps may require intermediate steps or database maintenance. It is equally worth checking changed requirements for the host system and the managed clients, so that inventory and channels remain complete after the update.
