Vaultwarden at a glance
Vaultwarden is a popular open-source, lightweight, self-hosted implementation of the Bitwarden server (Rust), letting you run your own password manager. Vaultwarden ships regular releases plus security fixes; as a system holding everyone's passwords, hardening and prompt patching are non-negotiable.
For admins Vaultwarden is maximally security-critical: it is your password vault, so keep it current, behind TLS, and never exposed unprotected — put it behind authentication and, ideally, restrict access to VPN or trusted networks, and secure the admin page (disable or protect it). Updates run by swapping the container image; back up the data directory (and the SQLite/Postgres database) first, and read the release notes. Enforce strong master passwords and two-factor. After updating, verify that clients sync and login works. Compatible with official Bitwarden clients. Track releases closely; patchletter surfaces new Vaultwarden versions so security fixes land immediately.
