VLC media player is a ubiquitous, open-source media player that handles almost any format. VideoLAN ships releases in an unhurried cadence, occasionally with security fixes to the many demuxers and codecs.

For admins VLC runs with user rights and is a modest security risk in itself, but it parses untrusted media files — so codec/demuxer vulnerabilities are a real vector, and a current version is worth keeping. Roll it out via winget or the installer; source it officially. New versions bring format support and fixes. In managed environments, keep it in the software inventory and patch cycle rather than letting stale copies accumulate. Opening media from unknown sources is the risk to bear in mind; keeping VLC current closes known parser flaws.
