Winget-AutoUpdate, or WAU, fills a gap in the Windows Package Manager: winget can install and upgrade software, but it does not schedule anything on its own. WAU creates a scheduled task that checks all winget-managed applications at configurable intervals and installs new versions unattended. This keeps a baseline of third-party software current across workstations without administrators having to update each application by hand.
For use in organisations, the tool offers include and exclude lists so that individual programs can be targeted or held back from automatic updates – for example when an application is pinned to an approved version. Notifications, logging and running in the user or system context are all configurable.
Being a script-and-task package with no server component, WAU is installed per device. When updating it, review the release notes, since default paths, parameters and bundled dependencies can change between versions and an unattended run would otherwise quietly behave differently.
