WireGuard Tools at a glance

WireGuard is a modern, lean VPN known for simplicity, speed and strong cryptography; wireguard-tools provides the userspace utilities (wg, wg-quick) to configure it. It ships releases in an unhurried cadence plus fixes; the kernel module is now in mainline Linux, and the tools track it.

For admins WireGuard's minimal, audited codebase is a security strength — a small attack surface compared with older VPNs — but the configuration and keys are everything: protect the private keys, distribute peers' public keys carefully, and lock down which IPs are allowed. It usually comes from the distribution (kernel module plus tools); keep them current for fixes. There's no built-in key rotation or user management, so those are your responsibility (or use a management layer like Tailscale/NetBird on top).
