WizTree at a glance

WizTree is a very fast Windows disk-space analyzer that reads the NTFS master file table directly to map what is using a drive — a favourite in the admin toolbox for its speed. It ships regular releases; it's an occasional-use utility rather than a resident service.

For admins WizTree runs with the user's (often elevated) rights to read the MFT and is read-only with respect to your data, so the update driver is features and compatibility rather than security. Keep a reasonably current copy and source it from the official site (mind the free-for-personal versus paid-for-commercial licensing). New versions improve scanning and reporting. Its value is operational: quickly find the large files and folders filling a disk. Because it's often used portable, watch for stale copies on technician sticks.
