X-Mouse Button Control reassigns the buttons, scroll wheel, and additional controls of a mouse on Windows. Administrators and users create application- and window-specific profiles and map each button to actions such as keyboard shortcuts, macros, window commands, or simulated input. Several layers per profile can be switched through a hotkey or a mouse button, letting a single device adapt to different programs.

The vendor ships the program as a single installer and maintains a public change log that documents each build with its fixes and additions. Alongside stable builds, beta versions appear from time to time. The tool is maintained at irregular intervals, and longer gaps can occur between releases.

Before updating, backing up existing profiles is advisable, because the settings are tied to the application. Anyone running a beta should check whether a stable build already contains the same fixes. In managed environments, the installer can be deployed silently through package sources.
