Zotero at a glance
Zotero is an open-source application for managing scholarly literature and source material. It gathers metadata from web pages, library catalogues and PDF files, sorts them into collections and produces citations and bibliographies in common citation styles. Browser connectors and plugins for widely used word processors let users reach their library directly from within the writing process. Shared group libraries support collaborative work on source collections, while synchronisation runs either through the Zotero service or a self-hosted WebDAV store.
The client ships as a cross-platform desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux and includes a built-in update mechanism. For rollout in managed environments, installation packages are available that can be distributed through the usual software deployment channels.
For larger version jumps, pay attention to the compatibility of installed extensions, as these need to be adapted per major release; the format of the local database may also change. Backing up the Zotero data directory before such transitions is advisable.
