Bitwarden at a glance
Bitwarden is a widely used open-source password manager for individuals, teams and enterprises, available as a hosted service and self-hosted server, with apps across every platform. Bitwarden ships frequent client and server updates plus security fixes; as software guarding credentials, keeping it current is a critical security task.
For admins there are two sides: the clients (apps and browser extensions, which generally auto-update — confirm they do on managed machines and deploy through software distribution) and, if you self-host, the server. Self-hosted Bitwarden (or the lightweight Vaultwarden implementation) must be kept current, behind TLS, and never exposed unprotected. Bitwarden's security model is strong (end-to-end encryption), so the priorities are current clients, strong account security (a strong master password and two-factor), and the organization policies. Back up the self-hosted vault data. After updates, verify unlock and sync. Track client and server releases; patchletter surfaces new Bitwarden versions so security fixes land.
